How Often

How Often Does Your Chevy Need An Oil Change?

Most Chevrolet vehicles today go well past 3,000 miles between oil changes. Your vehicle will let you know when service is due, and our Certified Service technicians are trained to know what your specific engine needs.

When the “Change Engine Oil Soon” message appears, plan on service within the next 600 miles. If you drive very little, the oil and filter should still be changed at least once a year.

What Oil Does Your Chevrolet Take?

Oil type and capacity change with the engine, not just the model. Here is what the current generation of the most common Chevrolets calls for.

Trailblazer1.3L Turbodexos1 full synthetic, SAE 0W-204.8 qtPF66

Specifications vary by model year, engine and RPO code. We confirm yours by VIN before anything goes in — call the parts counter at (916) 367-4192 if you are doing the work yourself.

The 5.3L Capacity Changed In 2014 Older Vortec 5.3L engines take 6.0 quarts of 5W-30. The EcoTec3 5.3L that replaced it takes 8.0 quarts of 0W-20. Going by the old number leaves a newer truck two quarts low.
The 2.7L TurboMax Is Not 0W-20 It calls for 5W-30, unlike the V8s it sits alongside in the Silverado lineup. Small turbocharged engines are also the ones most sensitive to oil that does not meet the dexos1 Gen 3 standard.
Duramax Diesel Takes dexosD Diesel engines use a different specification entirely — dexos1 is not a substitute. See Duramax diesel service.

Oil Change Questions

How often should I change the oil in my Chevy?

Follow the Engine Oil Life System rather than a fixed mileage. It monitors speed, engine temperature and operating conditions to determine when service is due. Change the oil and filter at least once a year even if the system has not reached 0%.

What does the “Change Engine Oil Soon” message mean?

It means oil change service is needed as soon as possible, within the next 600 miles. The Engine Oil Life System also has to be reset afterward, which our Certified Service technicians handle as part of the visit.

Is the 3,000-mile oil change still a rule?

No. Advances in engine technology mean most of today’s Chevrolet vehicles go considerably longer than 3,000 miles between oil changes. Older models built before the Engine Oil Life System may still call for shorter intervals.

Do I need full synthetic oil?

dexos1 Full Synthetic is the recommended specification for most Chevrolet gas engines. Compared with conventional oil it offers improved protection, better piston cleanliness, reduced oil consumption and greater viscosity control. Check your owner’s manual or ask your advisor for your specific engine.

How many quarts of oil does a Silverado 1500 take?

The 5.3L and 6.2L EcoTec3 V8s used from 2014 onward take 8.0 quarts of 0W-20 with a filter change. The older Vortec 5.3L takes 6.0 quarts of 5W-30, so the year matters. The 2.7L TurboMax uses 5W-30 rather than 0W-20. Call with your VIN and we will confirm which applies to your truck.

What is dexos1 Gen 3?

It is General Motors' current engine oil specification, and the license number has to appear on the bottle. Meeting API SP alone is not enough. Gen 3 is backwards compatible with earlier dexos1, ILSAC GF-6 and API SP oils, so it covers older Chevrolets as well.

Do I need an appointment for an oil change?

An appointment gets you in and out faster and can be booked online any time. If you would rather come in today, call the service line and we will tell you honestly what the wait looks like.

Will you change the oil in a Chevy I bought somewhere else?

Yes. We service any Chevrolet regardless of where it was purchased.

How do I check my oil level between visits?

Check it with the oil warm, at normal operating temperature, and the vehicle on level ground. Your owner’s manual gives the correct procedure for your model, which gives a more accurate dipstick reading.

Can you come to me instead?

For routine maintenance, often yes — Mobile Service Plus performs the work at your home or job site. Availability depends on the service and your location, so ask when you schedule.
